As it is in Heaven

April 8, 2008

For if He were on earth, He (Jesus) would not be a priest, since there are (already) priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He (God) said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”  -Hebrews 8′

This passage and the whole book of Hebrews for that matter have been intriguing me lately. I’m more than a curious about the first part that says, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” Wow, what immense implications this has for our reading of the book of Exodus.

Suddenly Israel’s trip through the wilderness to Mount Sinai (aka Horeb, aka Mountain of the Lord, aka not the one on the Sinai peninsula) takes on a new dimension to me. More than that, suddenly the tabernacle looks different to me. Usually when I read the accounts of EXACTLY what the tabernacle MUST look like, it’s honestly boring.

But if Moses was making it exactly as he saw it in heaven, trying to recreate the throne room of God maybe, then that begins to be interesting. We get to see into heaven. We get to see what the cherubim around the throne see. I think I’m going to go read the book of Exodus.
